The preamble of the UDHR lamented the ‘barbarous acts’ resulting from the ‘disregard and contempt for human rights’. ‘Celebrate’ seems an odd word to use, however, in a year that has seen Syrians gassed and pipe-bombed, Yemenis killed in air strikes, and Rohingya forced from their homes and their villages torched – all seemingly with impunity.Įven in more stable and peaceful societies, including the United States and Hungary, many of the rights associated with healthy civic life – freedom of speech and association, an independent judiciary, the right to privacy – are increasingly threatened or curtailed. The declaration has been the foundation of the work of nongovernmental organizations such as Amnesty International.The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) celebrates its 70th anniversary today. It has acquired more juridical status than originally intended and has been widely used, even by national courts, as a means of judging compliance with member states’ human-rights obligations. Among its 30 articles are definitions of civil and political rights (including the rights to life, liberty, and a fair trial) as well as definitions of economic, social, and cultural rights (including the right to social security and to participation in the cultural life of one’s community), all of which are owed by UN member states to those under their jurisdiction. Drafted by a committee chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt, it was adopted without dissent but with eight abstentions.
